B.C. Provincial Assessments: Weekly Preparation for Graduation and University

Understand B.C.’s three graduation assessments, their role in university planning, and how Johnathan Academy teachers dedicate at least one class each week to preparation.

At Johnathan Academy, preparation for B.C.'s provincial graduation assessments is part of everyday learning. Our teachers dedicate at least one class period each week to helping students prepare. This regular support gives students time to build confidence while strengthening the reading, communication and problem-solving skills they will carry into further study.

Which provincial assessments do students take?

For students in the English-language B.C. Dogwood graduation program, the three provincial graduation assessments are:

  • Grade 10 Numeracy Assessment: Applying mathematical understanding to real-world situations, interpreting information and explaining reasoning.
  • Grade 10 Literacy Assessment: Understanding and analysing different forms of text and communicating ideas clearly.
  • Grade 12 Literacy Assessment: Using critical and reflective thinking to analyse diverse texts and communicate an informed interpretation or perspective.

These assessments draw on learning across subjects. Preparation involves understanding a question, finding relevant evidence and explaining a response. Francophone and French Immersion dual-diploma programs have additional or different assessment requirements.

Why do they matter for graduation and university?

Completing the required assessments is part of graduating from high school in B.C. Students must also meet the applicable credit and required-course requirements for the Dogwood Diploma. Checking assessment arrangements early helps students avoid missing a graduation requirement.

Results use four proficiency levels: Emerging (1), Developing (2), Proficient (3) and Extending (4). Completing an assessment for provincial graduation purposes and meeting a university's specified proficiency requirement are distinct matters.

Some universities set an explicit assessment condition. UBC states that B.C. high school students graduating in June 2022 or later must achieve Proficient (Level 3) on the Grade 12 Literacy Assessment to maintain their offer of admission. Offers for applicants below this level are reviewed individually. Students should keep this requirement in view both during application and after receiving an offer. Read UBC's official policy.

Assessment preparation belongs within a broader university plan. UBC also considers academic Grade 11 and Grade 12 results, courses relevant to the chosen degree, and the personal profile required for most high school applicants. Completing provincial assessments alone does not fulfil every admission requirement. Students should check prerequisites, English-language requirements, documents and deadlines for each institution, and follow their own offer conditions.

At least one preparation class every week

A regular class period provides space for sustained preparation, questions and practice. We encourage students to participate actively, ask about unfamiliar tasks and develop habits of checking answers and explaining their reasoning.

Useful preparation priorities include:

  • Literacy: Identify central ideas and perspectives, support interpretations with evidence, and write clear responses that address the task.
  • Numeracy: Understand the context, interpret graphs and data, explain a method and check whether a conclusion is reasonable.
  • Assessment readiness: Work with official samples, become familiar with response formats, practise time management and use feedback to identify next steps.

These habits also support the reading, reasoning and independent learning expected at university. Through weekly classroom support, Johnathan Academy helps students build their skills steadily and approach their assessments with greater confidence.
