Academics

Johnathan Academy is certified by the BC Ministry of Education and teaches the provincial curriculum for Grades 8 through 12. Graduates receive the B.C. Certificate of Graduation — the Dogwood Diploma — the same credential earned in any public secondary school in the province.

How the Year Is Structured

The school year runs in terms rather than a single continuous timetable. Students carry four courses in the Fall and Winter terms and two in the Spring, which keeps the load concentrated: fewer subjects at once, more contact hours in each.

For students who need to recover a credit, raise a grade, or move ahead, the Summer term offers a further two courses.

Four Pathways, One Transcript

• BC curriculum — the required and elective courses that make up the Dogwood Diploma
• AP courses — university-level coursework taught alongside the BC curriculum, for students aiming at selective universities
• SAT preparation — for students applying to the United States, where the test still carries weight at many institutions
• Academic competitions — Waterloo and CEMC contests, AMC and other US olympiads, for students whose strength is worth demonstrating outside the transcript

These are not separate streams. A Grade 11 student may be taking Dogwood requirements, one or two AP courses, and sitting a Waterloo contest in the same year.

Class Size

Courses are taught in small sections. The practical effect is that a teacher knows within the first weeks where each student is losing the thread — which is when it can still be fixed, rather than at the report card.

University Counselling

Counselling begins in Grade 10, not in the final term of Grade 12. Course selection, AP subject choice, testing timelines, and application strategy are treated as one plan rather than a series of separate decisions.
