Johnathan Academy has extensive experience supporting international students. With four campuses in China and over ten years of operation, we understand the unique needs of students transitioning to study in Canada.

Homestay Program

We provide carefully vetted local homestay placements, giving international students a supportive English immersion environment and a Canadian family experience.

Campus Transfer

Students currently unable to depart from China can pursue their studies at our Chinese campuses for grades 10-12 and then transfer to the Vancouver campus without delaying their high school graduation.

Student Support

Our dedicated staff provides ongoing support including academic guidance, cultural adjustment assistance, and regular communication with families.

International applicants follow the same academic assessment as everyone else. What differs is the paperwork around it — and the paperwork is what usually determines whether a student starts in September or in January.

Start With the Timeline, Not the Application

The study permit is the long pole. Processing times are set by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, vary by country, and are outside the school's control. Families who begin in spring for a September start are usually comfortable; families who begin in July usually are not.

Apply for the permit only after receiving a Letter of Acceptance — it is a required document for the application.

What You Will Need

  • Academic transcripts for the previous two years, with certified English translation
  • Passport copy
  • Evidence of English proficiency, or arrangement for assessment
  • Custodianship documentation for students under the age of majority whose parents will not be in Canada
  • Proof of funds, as required by IRCC

English

Students are assessed on English level as part of admission. A student who is academically strong but not yet ready for full English-medium instruction is not simply refused — the assessment is about placing them where they can actually follow the course, which sometimes means a different grade or a supported start.

Living Here

Students without family in Vancouver are placed through the homestay programme. Placement is arranged as part of enrolment, not left to the family to solve on arrival.

Credits From Another System

Students transferring from a curriculum outside BC are assessed on the credits already earned, and course selection for the coming year is planned around what still needs to be completed for the Dogwood Diploma. This is done before the student arrives so that no year is wasted repeating what is already done.
