Johnathan Academy is a B.C. Ministry of Education certified independent secondary school in Vancouver, teaching Grades 8 through 12. The school was established in 2020 and sits at 400-5750 Oak Street, on the corner of Oak and 41st.
What Kind of School This Is
Small, academically focused, and built around students who are aiming at competitive universities — many of them while studying in a second language and living away from their families.
Those two facts shape everything else. Class sizes are small because a student working in a second language cannot afford to be one of thirty. University counselling starts in Grade 10 because the decisions that shape an application are made long before Grade 12. Homestay placement is handled by the school because a student who is unsettled at home does not learn well at school.
The Credential
Graduates receive the B.C. Certificate of Graduation — the Dogwood Diploma — the same credential earned at any public secondary school in the province. Courses follow the provincial curriculum and are taught by BC-certified teachers.
This matters when the transcript reaches an admissions office: a provincial credential is read directly, not interpreted.
Beyond the Diploma
- AP courses taught alongside the BC curriculum, for students who want university-level work before university
