Pumpkins, Creativity and Community: Halloween at Johnathan Academy

Pumpkin carving, shared pizza and a glowing display brought students and teachers together for a creative Halloween celebration at Johnathan Academy.

What can an ordinary pumpkin become? At Johnathan Academy's Halloween celebration, students answered that question with drawing tools, carving tools and plenty of imagination.

Pumpkins spread across the tables, students and teachers working together, shared pizza and a glowing display created a memorable snapshot of autumn campus life. Here is a look at the celebration through photographs.

Students with their pumpkin creations

Turning an idea into a character

Students gathered around the tables to plan expressions, clear out their pumpkins and carve eyes and mouths. Some designs featured broad smiles; others added cat-like ears and whiskers or used seeds and pumpkin pulp for a humorous finishing touch.

Working with similar materials produced a range of distinctive creations. Trying an idea, observing the result and making an adjustment were all part of the enjoyment.

Creating together, connecting naturally

The photographs show classmates working side by side and teachers leaning in to help with the details. Discussing a design or looking closely at a cut gave students and teachers something practical to work through together.

Beyond the usual classroom setting, the activity offered a shared experience of making something. Expressing an idea, listening to a partner and asking for help are valuable habits for students to practise in a school community.

Sharing food and celebrating the finished work

Pizza and time together added a relaxed moment to the celebration. Alongside making their own pumpkins, students could see one another's designs and gather for a group photograph.

As the room grew darker, the pumpkin lanterns' outlines and expressions stood out. The ideas developed at the tables became a glowing autumn display.

A fuller picture of high school life

When choosing a full-time high school, families can look at both the academic program and everyday school life: how students interact with teachers and peers, participate in group activities and find opportunities to express themselves. This Halloween celebration captures one such moment at Johnathan Academy.

Thank you to the students and teachers who brought their creativity, cooperation and smiles to the activity. We look forward to seeing that willingness to try and connect continue in school life.
