Our mission is to prepare every student to successfully enroll in the most prestigious world-class universities through rigorous academics and whole-student development.

Johnathan Academy delivers the British Columbia curriculum in an environment shaped by the fact that most of our students are building a life in a second language and a new country at the same time as they are finishing secondary school.

Mission

To teach the full B.C. curriculum required for the Dogwood Diploma, at a standard that prepares students for admission to competitive universities — while giving the personal support that a student far from home actually needs to reach that standard.

Vision

That graduates enrol at world-class universities, and go on to work that matters.

That second half is not decoration. A school that optimises only for admission produces students who arrive at university without knowing why they are there.

Responsibility · Innovation · Mission

Responsibility — for one's own work first. Small classes make it difficult to be passive; a teacher who knows every name notices who has stopped contributing.

Innovation — a willingness to approach a problem a second way when the first way fails. It is the habit that separates students who cope with difficulty from students who avoid it.

Mission — a reason for the work beyond the transcript. Students who have one sustain effort through the parts of school that are simply hard.

What This Looks Like in Practice

  • Class sizes small enough that no student is anonymous
  • University counselling from Grade 10, treated as one continuous plan
  • An English-medium environment supported rather than assumed — students are placed where they can follow the course, not where the calendar says they should be
  • Homestay placement handled by the school, because a student who is unsettled at home does not learn well at school

Land Acknowledgement

Johnathan Academy acknowledges that we are situated on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territories of the Coast Salish peoples — the Squamish, Stó:lō, Tsleil-Waututh, and Musqueam Nations — and is committed to reconciliation with First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples in keeping with the expectations of the B.C. Ministry of Education.
