Community Service
Making a difference in the greater Vancouver community.
Community service is an integral part of the Johnathan Academy experience. Students participate in volunteer work that builds character, develops empathy, and contributes meaningfully to society.
Volunteer Programs
Regular volunteering at local organizations, food banks, seniors' residences, and environmental cleanup events.
School-Organized Events
Annual charity drives, community outreach days, and partnerships with local non-profit organizations.
Community service at Johnathan Academy is partly a graduation requirement and partly the thing students remember. Both are true, and it is better to say so than to pretend only the second one matters.
The Requirement
Career-Life Connections, a required Grade 12 course for the Dogwood Diploma, includes a component of work or service experience. Hours need to be documented as they are completed. Students who leave this to the final term find that suitable placements are not always available on demand.
What Students Do
Ongoing volunteering — regular commitments with local organisations: food banks, seniors' residences, community centres, and libraries.
School-organised — annual charity drives, community outreach days, and partnerships that run year over year.
Regular commitment counts for more than a one-day event, both for the organisation and for what a reference letter can say about you.
Choosing Something
The placements that work are the ones a student can actually get to and will actually keep doing. A commitment two bus rides away, taken on because it sounded impressive, tends to end quietly in November.
Language is not a barrier the way students expect. Many organisations specifically need volunteers who speak Mandarin or Cantonese — for some of our students, that is the most useful thing they bring.
Documenting Hours
Keep a record as you go: organisation, dates, hours, supervisor contact. Reconstructing a year of hours from memory in Grade 12 is unpleasant and not always possible.
