Johnathan Academy is certified by the BC Ministry of Education as an independent secondary school (Grades 8-12), authorized to grant the BC Certificate of Graduation (Dogwood Diploma).

College Board AP Exam Center

Johnathan Academy is certified by the BC Ministry of Education and Child Care as an independent secondary school. That certification is what makes the credits earned here real: courses follow the provincial curriculum, are taught by BC-certified teachers, and count toward the B.C. Certificate of Graduation — the same Dogwood Diploma awarded by any public school in the province.

What Certification Actually Means

For a family comparing schools, certification is the difference between a transcript universities recognize and one they have to interpret. Specifically:

  • Courses carry provincial credit. A Chemistry 11 taken here is the same credit as a Chemistry 11 taken anywhere in BC.
  • Teachers hold BC certification. Instruction is delivered by teachers licensed by the province, not by unlicensed instructors.
  • The school is inspected. Certified independent schools are subject to ministry inspection against defined standards — the school does not self-certify.
  • The diploma is the provincial one. Graduates receive the Dogwood Diploma, not a school-issued certificate.

Verifying It Yourself

Certification status is a matter of public record. Any family can confirm a school's standing directly with the Ministry rather than taking the school's word for it — and it is reasonable to check this for any independent school you are considering, including this one.

AP and SAT Authorization

Separately from provincial certification, Johnathan Academy is authorized by the College Board as an AP Exam Centre (AP school code 820004) and as an SAT test centre (centre code 94437). These authorizations are what allow the school to administer those exams on site, including for candidates from other schools.
