We’re committed to giving students the tools they need to build their confidence, grow their problem solving skills and get excited about mathematics and computing. We bring over 50 years of experience to the work that we do. Our story began in 1963 when secondary school teachers developed the first mathematics contest in Ontario. From that spark, the CEMC has grown into one of Canada’s foremost mathematics and computer science authorities for young people. Housed within the Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Waterloo, the CEMC is the largest organization of its kind in Canada with more than 40 dedicated faculty and staff and hundreds of committed volunteers. The purpose of the COMC is to encourage students to explore, discover, and learn more about mathematics and problem-solving. The competition serves to provide teachers with a unique student enrichment activity during the fall term. Approximately 80 top-ranking students from the COMC and the Canadian Mathematical Olympiad Qualifying Repêchage (CMOQR) will be invited to write the Canadian Mathematical Olympiad (CMO). Based on the results from the COMC, the CMO and other national and international mathematics competitions and camps, the Canadian Mathematical Society IMO Committee will then select six students as part of Math Team Canada to travel to, and compete in, the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO).
