The CEMC is dedicated to inspiring students to reach further with mathematics and computer science. We’re committed to giving students the tools they need to build their confidence, grow their problem solving skills and get excited about mathematics and computing.

We bring over 50 years of experience to the work that we do. Our story began in 1963 when secondary school teachers developed the first mathematics contest in Ontario. From that spark, the CEMC has grown into one of Canada’s foremost mathematics and computer science authorities for young people.

Housed within the Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Waterloo, the CEMC is the largest organization of its kind in Canada with more than 40 dedicated faculty and staff and hundreds of committed volunteers.

Today, our programs and resources make a difference for students and educators around the world:

  • Our free courseware receives 10 million pageviews annually

  • More than 265,000 students in over 80 countries register for our 15 contests each year

  • 1.5 million learners and teachers benefit from our Problem of the Week

  • 630 learners participate in CEMC workshops annually

  • 20,000 students benefit each year from the CEMC Visits Schools program at more than 300 schools in over 15 countries

  • 300 teachers are currently pursuing advanced degrees in our Master of Mathematics for Teacher’s (MMT) program

  • Hundreds of MMT alumni are sharing new knowledge and renewed enthusiasm with their students around the world

open mathematics challenge

The Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge (COMC) is Canada's premier national mathematics competition open to any student with an interest in and grasp of high school math. The purpose of the COMC is to encourage students to explore, discover, and learn more about mathematics and problem-solving. The competition serves to provide teachers with a unique student enrichment activity during the fall term.

Approximately 80 top-ranking students from the COMC and the Canadian Mathematical Olympiad Qualifying Repêchage (CMOQR) will be invited to write the Canadian Mathematical Olympiad (CMO). Based on the results from the COMC, the CMO and other national and international mathematics competitions and camps, the Canadian Mathematical Society IMO Committee will then select six students as part of Math Team Canada to travel to, and compete in, the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO).

Johnathan Academy is a host site for COMC competition.

American Mathematics Competitions

The MAA’s American Mathematics Competitions (MAA AMC) program leads the nation in strengthening the mathematical capabilities of the next generation of problem-solvers. Through classroom resources and friendly competition, the MAA AMC program helps America’s educators identify talent and foster a love of mathematics. The MAA AMC program positively impacts the analytical skills needed for future careers in an innovative society.

The American Mathematics Competitions are a series of examinations and curriculum materials that build problem-solving skills and mathematical knowledge in middle and high school students.

The AMC 10 and AMC 12 are both 25-question, 75-minute, multiple-choice examinations in high school mathematics designed to promote the development and enhancement of problem-solving skills.

The AMC 10 is for students in 10th grade and below and covers the high school curriculum up to 10th grade. Students in grade 10 or below and under 17.5 years of age on the day of the contest can take the AMC 10. The AMC 12 covers the entire high school curriculum, including trigonometry, advanced algebra, and advanced geometry, but excluding calculus. Students in grade 12 or below and under 19.5 years of age on the day of the contest can take the AMC 12.

Johnathan Academy is a host site for the AMC.

Students need to bring their personal devices to participate in this year's electronic version of the AMC exam.

The AMC 8 is a 25-question, 40-minute, multiple-choice examination in middle school mathematics designed to promote the development of problem-solving skills. The AMC 8 provides an opportunity for middle school students to develop positive attitudes towards analytical thinking and mathematics that can assist in future careers. Students apply classroom skills to unique problem-solving challenges in a low-stress and friendly environment.

The material covered on the AMC 8 includes topics from a typical middle school mathematics curriculum. Possible topics include but are not limited to counting and probability, estimation, proportional reasoning, elementary geometry including the Pythagorean Theorem, spatial visualization, everyday applications, and reading and interpreting graphs and tables. In addition, some of the later questions may involve linear or quadratic functions and equations, coordinate geometry, and other topics traditionally covered in a beginning algebra course.
